Windsor Sinfonia

Biography

Luke Anthony is a conductor, music teacher and guitarist based in Surrey, Berkshire and the surrounding area.

He has had engagements with orchestras such as Trinity College Orchestra, Oxford University Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Orchestra of North London, and is currently Principal Conductor of the newly formed Windsor Sinfonia (see below).

Luke graduated in 2003 from Trinity College, Oxford, with a BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics.

During his time in Oxford, he directed a number of groups and ensembles, as well as being heavily involved in the organisation and administration of musical events in the area. He was Treasurer and Orchestral Manager of Trinity College Orchestra in 2000-1, and Publicity Officer for Oxford University Wind Orchestra in 2001-2.

As an instrumentalist, Luke plays clarinet and guitar, studying the latter under Colin Arenstein up to 1999. Luke has participated in numerous groups and ensembles in Berkshire - including Berkshire Youth Guitar Trio, Reading University Symphony Orchestra, East Berkshire Youth Orchestra and Thames Valley Sinfonia. He has participated in the National Festival of Music for Youth both on clarinet and guitar, and was a solo competition runner-up at the British Federation of Banjoists, Mandolinists and Guitarists in 1998.

Luke began his conducting studies whilst at Oxford under the guidance of Robert Roscoe (conductor of Berkshire Youth Orchestra and Windsor & Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra), and soon went on to develop the talent of Trinity College Orchestra over three academic terms. Following on from this, Luke took over from Christopher Leedham as Principal Conductor of Oxford University Wind Orchestra in April 2002. During his three academic terms with the ensemble, a varied and wide-ranging repertoire was undertaken - including one premiere and one second performance (see Experience).

During Summer 2003, Luke was involved in a chamber orchestra tour to Spain as associate conductor of King Edward VIth Chamber Orchestra, based in Southampton. Once again, a varied and challenging repertoire was undertaken over a gruelling 2-week concert schedule (nine concerts in all).

On his return to Maidenhead in September 2003, Luke accepted a post as guitar teacher for Berkshire Young Musicians Trust in Reading, and is continuing his conducting work with orchestras in the local area. He has recently formed the Windsor Sinfonia, conducting their inaugural performance at Windsor Parish Church on Saturday 10th July 2004 (see Experience). This concert raised £1,000 for Thames Valley Hospice, a local charity based in Windsor. Plans to build upon this success are currently taking shape (see Windsor Sinfonia), with a second concert scheduled for Summer 2007.

In January 2005, Luke participated in a conducting masterclass with the Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra in Kosice, under the direction of Maestro Kirk Trevor. There are some  video clips available  showing both rehearsals and concert, which include works by Elgar, Prokofiev, Beethoven and Dvorak.

Most recently, Luke has attained an ABRSM teaching diploma (DipABRSM) in guitar pedagogy. He is available as a private teacher of the guitar. He also takes private tuition from Howard Johnstone.

Luke has also joined a new band called "Gini and the Tonics". They have had their first few gigs in the second half of 2006, and hope to play more together from 2007 and beyond.
